Tips on how to build a sugar glider cage.

Sugar gliders are cute, nocturnal mammals mostly found inAustralia,Papua New Guinea,Tasmania, andIndonesia. They are so named because of their preference for the sweet sap of eucalyptus, gum, and acacia trees. They live in small groups with up to seven members, led by a dominant male. Sugar gliders make their nests in hollows in trees. They glide through the air for a distance of up to one hundred and fifty meters with the help of a thin membrane extending from their fifth finger to their first toe.

Sugar gliders have a lot of appeal as pets since they’re small, warm, furry, and have adorably big eyes. You should keep at least three at a time to keep them from getting lonesome. To house your brood of sugar gliders, you can use a modified bird cage. It is often much cheaper and easier to just build your own.

The size of your cage should be directly proportional to the number of sugar gliders you intend to keep. It should be big enough to allow them to move around and play at night with a suitable den provided for them to curl up in and sleep during the day. You can use a wire mesh with spaces less than an inch in size. The opening of the case should be the type that is big enough to admit the food containers but small enough not to let your pet sugar gliders easily escape. The home made cage for your pet sugar gilders should also have somewhere to hang the food and water containers. You should be able to detach and return the food containers with ease.

Give your sugar glider nest box a homey touch by giving them a bedding of corn cobs. Although corn is not usually found in their native habitat, captive sugar gliders simply love corn cob beddings. The sugar glider nest box should have an opening big enough to admit a full grown sugar glider but not too big to let in too much draft. It could be made of plastic but wood would be preferable. Remember that sugar gliders live in hollowed out trees in the wild, so try and replicate the hollowed tree feel as much as possible. Don’t keep a single sugar glider at home. They usually live in groups of five or more and a lone sugar glider may expire from loneliness.

If you happen to live in a temperate climate, you can even build your sugar glider cage outdoors, but away from direct sunlight. You could build it around a leafy tree or shrub to give your pet sugar gliders somewhere to play in. Just make sure that the cage is secure enough from potential sugar glider predators like rats, snakes, and stray cats.

Keeping sugar gliders can be a rewarding experience with their cheerful disposition and amusing antics. Given enough time, you can even tame them well enough to take them out of their cage and play with them in your hands. Just make sure to feed them a balanced diet to keep them away from disease or infirmities.

Parents: How to Deal with Kids Begging for Pets

We all have our reasons for either allowing a pet, or not allowing it.  We have to make those reasons clear to the child.  If it is a simply matter such as the landlord will not allow a pet, then explain it to them that way, but never lie or blame somebody if that is not the case.  If there are household allergies to cats, your child may soon counter act with wanting an Iguana, so you also need to determine if your answer is “NO” to all pets, or just to some.

Pets are a lot of work, I have several pets from tiny walking stick insects to larger outdoor animals such as horses, however you may not share my love for animals, nor my willingness to commit my time to feeding and caring for them.  Everyone is different, above all children MUST understand that a pet is a lifetime commitment, and in most cases they are not able to make that commitment, so it rests on you as an adult to accept the full responsibility for an animal.  Kids will promise the moon if they think it will mean you will say yes, but as an adult we  have to realize they are just saying what they think we want to hear.  To expect a child to care fully for a pet, is unfair to the child, and ultimately unfair to the pet.

So you have to decide, does “NO” mean “no” or does it mean “Maybe”.  Never say “Maybe” if you don’t mean it.
Ask yourself  if there are any pets you would allow.  Pets are great for keeping children focused, for showing them that there are other things to be compassionate about.  Pets teach responsibility, and in some cases encourage activity for otherwise lazy kids.  So consider this and possibly come to a mutual agreement.

If there is no way you are getting any pet, you have to tell your child this, and make it clear that you do not want to be asked again.  Set a punishment for them and stick to it, if they ask again, no television for 2 days.  If however you are open to suggestions here is what you do.

1  Have your child write a list of what pets they might want, along with at least 3 pros and cons for each.

2  Have your child write a weekly plan on how they are going to give time for care to this pet as well as other responsibilites such as school and friends.

3  Have your child show commitment by keeping their room clean and helping with housework.  Remember though, not to use this as a cheap way to get more help, only ask them to do this if you are really considering getting a pet.

4  If money is a concern, have the child show willingness to sacrifce somethings in order to allow you to have more money for pet supplies and such.  An example would be if a child said they didn’t need so many new clothes, or was willing to get rid of their cell phone if they have one.

5 Review the childs list and other actions.

6  Reseach the pets for yourself.  One of the best ways to get honest information about any pet, is to go to your local Animal Shelter or SPCA ( a vet can tell you if you have one in your area if you do not know) you can go and look at the pets, and talk to the staff about an animals requirements, as well as the pros and cons.  Shelter staff will be far more open and honest than a pet store employee who mearly wants a sale.  Shelters have the main interest of having the pet get a forever home.

7 Make it 100% clear to the child that you are getting a pet on your terms with their agreement to help care for it (help care for it means you still have to oversee that the care is provided and fill in when they cannot).  Tell them not to beg further and set a time frame for looking at getting a pet, be honest, stick to it.

Now when you are ready to get a pet, again I would suggest the shelter as a first place to look, unless you want a purebred registered pet, in which case you are best to find a reputable breeder.  Shelters have lower prices on the whole and are more honest.  I have seen all too many innocent first time pet owners be taken advantage of, and overcharged by pet stores and back yard breeders.  As a rule if a pet does not have registration papers, and its parents do not have show records to prove they were worthy of being bred, the cost for that pet should be exactly what the shelters charge for adoptions.

Additionally you should never pay a cent for a pet that has not been seen by a vet, vaccinated, or dewormed (as in the case of cats and dogs mostly).  Pet Stores and Back yard breeders are in the business for profit, so you could very well be paying too much for what you get, and they generally will not stand behind the animal they sold to you, so “buyer beware”.  Reputable Breeders and Shelters will offer guarantees and contracts.   Do your research too, don’t get the wrong breed of dog for example and regret it later.

Finally all pets should be “FAMILY PETS” never belonging soley to a child.  If you need to make a medical decision for the pet, it is your decision as an adult to make, if the child moves out and cannot take the pet with them, the animals life is yours to look after, not to abandon.  Good luck with making the right choice.

Review of Pet Smart Pet Store

pet supplies

In a world where some pet stores sell pets they’ve purchased from puppy mills, there’s a store that actually stands for something. You won’t find dogs and cats sold in the aisles of Petsmart Pet Store, but you will find a store that’s focused on finding homes for the millions of abandoned, stray dogs and cats that reside in this country. In fact, Petsmart has been responsible for finding homes for over a million stray dogs and cats since its inception. That kind of community action means alot to me.

But, that’s not the only reason to love Petsmart pet store. They freely open their doors for you to bring your dog in on a leash to help choose his treats. And they do have aisles and aisles of treats, dog foods, toys, and just about anything you can imagine to make your pet’s life healthier and more rewarding. Their stores are the size of a large warehouse with spacious aisles and lots of room for navigating with your pet in tow.

In addition to the huge selection of pet supplies, Petsmart has good prices. I’ve compared their prices to other pet stores in our area and they’re consistently lower. As you know, pet supplies are becoming more and more expensive so a little savings helps when you have three dogs to feed.

Another positive about Petsmart pet store is the atmosphere. If you like lots of open space, activity, and the chance to see other people’s dogs, you’re going to love this store! On my last visit to the store, I saw two extremely friendly Rottweillers, a very well coiffed poodle, and a variety of enthusiastic and friendly mixed breeds. This makes shopping for pet supplies all the more fun!

I am also impressed with the friendly and caring staff at our local Petsmart store. All the employees I’ve spoken to have pets of their own, most of them, adopted abandoned and rescued animals. Their concern for the welfare of animals is obvious and they tend to be knowledgeable and eager to help you find the perfect item for your pet.

Petsmart sponsors adoption clinics for several rescue groups in our local area on Saturdays and Sundays. These groups bring in homeless animals so they can be seen, and hopefully adopted, by pet friendly shoppers. From what I hear, their adoption rate is quite high.

If I have one complaint about Petsmart pet store, it would be that their grooming center tends to be a bit disorganized and slow. We’ve taken our dogs there several times and have had to wait for long periods of time despite having a scheduled appointment. They do an excellent job of
grooming the animals though.

All in all, I would highly recommend Petsmart pet store as an excellent source for pet supplies and I’m sure your dog will agree once he’s paid them a visit!

How to Help a Pet Rescue

pet supplies

The next time you are on your laptop, do a google search for pet rescues in your area. Many pet rescues are in private homes, and there is no way you would know where they were located if you did not live in the area.

If you feel you want to add a pet to your home, check one of the local pet rescues before making a decision. A pet rescue may have exactly what you are looking for. Pet rescues ask for a donation when you take one of their pets.

Most pet rescues will have at least some pets that came from families who had to place the pet due to health or financial issues. It must be a terribly hard thing for someone to place their pet with a pet rescue. Any one of these cats or dogs would love to move in with you.

What if you can’t squeeze another pet into your busy life? Think about making a donation of pet food. First, call the pet rescue and ask what foods they prefer. Just as with your own pets, cats and dogs in a pet rescue need to stay on the same diet they are accustomed to.

Another way to help would be to donate money. This is something many of us are hesitant to do, because we worry about how our money will be used. Think about that for a minute: Most pet rescues are run on a very small budget. The rescue is feeding animals, and seeing to their health needs. Do you think there is ever enough money to go cover all the expenses?

Sometimes you may find yourself with pet supplies you don’t need. Pet toys, animal crates, or other supplies may be useful to the pet rescue. Don’t think such small items are not important. Most pet rescues need everything they can get. They are usually short handed, short of funds, and don’t say no when someone asks them to take in another pet.

Some senator in Michigan introduced the HAPPY ACT. This is an act that gives a 00 tax credit to pet owners in order to help them pay for pet supplies. You’ve got to be asking yourself, WHAT’S NEXT?!!!
